The Difficult Route

Finding a modem via the Computer or Modem Chipset

Use the Chipset Manufacturers A-Z Page if certain of the modem chipset’s name. It attempts to list every:

  • Modem Chipset Manufacturer
  • Motherboard Chipset Manufacturer (used for AC`97--AMR, CNR etc.--modems)

Beware: you need to be a real techno-slut to use these pages directly! The usual route in arriving at one of the pages is via a cross-link from a Modem Mfcs page , or via an Identification search page, which is fine - the modem identification can usually be trusted. To get there directly means knowing modems inside-out. Once there, the page offers a superb comparison across all compatible modems containing the same chipset or chipset family.

Most chipsets are grouped by the manufacturer into Families--like cars are provided in model ranges--and, in general, drivers for one chipset will work with others within the same Family. Do remember, though, that some modem mfcs customise their models so that only their drivers will work with their modem. The unknown-modem (Identification) & EEPROM links (Modem Mfcs or direct Identification) are provided for these.

Chipsets are organised on this site in the following hierarchy:

  • Manufacturer
  •  >> chipset family type e.g. Soft Modems
  •  >> >> chipset family e.g. V.92 Soft Modems
  •  >> >> >> chipset e.g. DFT V.92 Soft Modem (FCC)

The last two pages both contain an ordered listing of modems offering driver, support & info as well as general information on the chipset family, including chips in the chipset.

Site Info, History & Page Stats

These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (sadly, now gone). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.

Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
