Chipset Family Type: ADSL CPE
Chipset Family: AD20msp910 ADSL
Chipset: AD20msp910 Ethernet
General Information
This was the 1st-Generation of ADI’s ADSL chipsets, and was released in 1997. It succeeded due to adherence to international standards (although note the lack of ADSL-over-ISDN and ATM functionality) and inter-operability with nearly every DLC and modem manufacturer. It also helped (according to ADI’s reading of the timings) that the ITU chose the same DMT signal processing technique used in this (and every other) ADSL chipset.

These 6-chip chipsets have been used to develop both ADSL ethernet modems (the chipset provides every required element for a modem), and also combined Routers and/or Bridges. The DMT modem, AFE, line-driver and digital-interface are all separate chips, as is the DSP and controller. Modem manufacturers add ethernet-interface chips and (in the case of 3Coms OCR-810) an IBM PowerPC RISC CPU plus on-board OS providing a CLI and what is, essentially, a specialised micro-computer.

On-board Flash-ROM allows upgrade of the controller Firmware. This is achieved by means of a DB-9 serial port.

At the time of writing (Oct 2005) there are 3 generations of this chipset:
  1. AD20msp910 (this model)
  2. AD20msp918 (adds Annex-B + ATM)
  3. AD20msp930 (lower chip count)

Key

Mfc: the company no longer makes/supplies modems and/or their chipsets, or has been taken over, or otherwise fallen into commercial Tophet.

Modem: it is no longer in production.

Chip, Chipset, Family or Family-Type: it is no longer produced at the Foundry.

In short, the item marked with a has shuffled off this mortal coil, it has gone to meet it’s maker, to sing with the choir invisible; it is, not to put too fine a point upon it, an ex-modem (-Mfc, -Chip, -Chipset, -Family or -Type).

Site Info, History & Page Stats

These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (still maintained, but just re-direction pages to this site). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.

Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
