Known Problems
- Do NOT turn the ST off whilst booting up: if you
unplug (or turn off in any way) a router during it’s boot sequence, it will start in ‘BootP-mode’ the next time (it is waiting to load new firmware). This is by design; early ST routers were dual partition devices, with backup-firmware, but these are single-partition machines.
Firmware updates:
- Back up your ‘user.ini’ before flashing:
The Upgrade Wizard usually freezes after transfer, and before config restoration. Otherwise everything is fine, so just restart the router. Then, use the webpages to restore the old config file (Home > SpeedTouch > Configuration > Backup & Restore).
- Connect the computer directly to the ST by Ethernet on Port 1:
Neither USB nor Wireless connections will work. If the Gateway has a Switch (more than 1 ethernet port) only use Port 1.
- Disconnect from the Internet:
- Switch off all Anti-Virus programs + Firewalls:
This one is a major killer, and some programs are virtually impossible to stop
Problem: internet connections on r5 Firmware are distinctly slow.
Reason: use of Web Site Filtering policies (introduced in r5.3.0) is shafting performance.
Brief info + fix: the embedded web-pages changed radically in r5.3.0. A ‘Toolbox’ item appeared on the LHS menu, which in turn has a new ‘Parental Control’ option. Use of this “Differentiated Services Delivery” (off by default in r6 Firmware) is what affects the device performance (the embedded ARM CPU has insufficient horsepower for this job). The ‘Configure’ page contains an option to switch it off, which will restore performance back to normal.

Site Info, History & Page Stats
These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (still maintained, but just re-direction pages to this site). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.
Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
