General Information
- This is a single-chip development of the ACF-series of Rockwell (then Conexant) modems. Do not be fooled by the name - whilst a single chip contains all controller, datapump, bootloader & line-codec functions, other chips/components are required for line-interface & speakerphone. Plug-compatible variants are also provided for V.34 & V.32bis operation.
This series of modems--which can be identified by the presence of a “PLL” in the ati6 response, and typically will have 2 MB of Flash-ROM, which allows either V.90 or K56flex connection--looks like this:
- SC56D - 06827-xx
- SmartACF - P9373-xx
- SmartSCM - P2106-xx (embedded)
- RC56D - R6764-6x
The “D” in the name indicates that the modem downloads Firmware controller- & datapump-modules into the chip whilst in operation. This method of operation provides flexibility to the manufacturer in customisation of the modem. In addition, if Flash-EEPROM is provided, the modem Firmware can be upgraded by the customer. (The difference between this & the HCF-modems--which use a very similar method of operation & even share module-code--is that these modems contain a Controller in silicon, whereas the H-ost C-ontrolled M-odems use the computer for controller functions).

† Key
Mfc: the company no longer makes/supplies modems and/or their chipsets, or has been taken over, or otherwise fallen into commercial Tophet.
Modem: it is no longer in production.
Chip, Chipset, Family or Family-Type: it is no longer produced at the Foundry.
In short, the item marked with a † has shuffled off this mortal coil, it has gone to meet it’s maker, to sing with the choir invisible; it is, not to put too fine a point upon it, an ex-modem (-Mfc, -Chip, -Chipset, -Family or -Type).
Site Info, History & Page Stats
These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (sadly, now gone). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.
Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
