General Information
Originated by Rockwell on 29 Oct 1998 & developed by Conexant, this type of chipset was one of the company’s most successful designs. It contains a DSP but all controller functions are handled by software on the host computer. Originally only Windows drivers were provided, but more recently Conexant has extended driver support to the Linux platform. If an old Windows driver is updated the modem name may change, and will need to be altered on the General page of Dial-Up Networking Properties.

This is a low power version of the RH56D-PCI, using a variation of the same R6789 DSP. It was designed principally for mobile modems. See also the RMH56LD single-chip version which uses a R6819 DSP.

This chipset is prone to driver-load problems--not directly because of the chipset, but because of it’s place in Rockwell modem history:
  1. Many manufacturers issued modems using the RCV56HCF-PCI twin-chip chipset.
  2. They then changed to this chipset, but kept the same name for the modem.
  3. Drivers remained the same.
  4. This chipset has a different EEPROM ID to the earlier chipset, thus...
  5. Extra driver IDs had to be added to the .INF files.
  6. Not all drivers got all the necessary IDs.
  7. Just to twist the knife a little further, Rockwell made an early mistake with the HSF-chipset numbering, and gave some of them EEPROM IDs which are the same as these chipsets.
  8. Arghhh!

Key

Mfc: the company no longer makes/supplies modems and/or their chipsets, or has been taken over, or otherwise fallen into commercial Tophet.

Modem: it is no longer in production.

Chip, Chipset, Family or Family-Type: it is no longer produced at the Foundry.

In short, the item marked with a has shuffled off this mortal coil, it has gone to meet it’s maker, to sing with the choir invisible; it is, not to put too fine a point upon it, an ex-modem (-Mfc, -Chip, -Chipset, -Family or -Type).

Site Info, History & Page Stats

These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (still maintained, but just re-direction pages to this site). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.

Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
