General Information
The ‘Smart’ within the name refers to the Smart-DAA with which this chipset was designed to work from it’s inception on 7 June 1999.

A new combo datapump-controller chip--the CX81300--was introduced on 4 June 2002 (replacing the L2800-38 + P9373-11), together with a replacement SmartDAA2 chip--the CX20463-11. In addition, the ISA PnP plus on-board hardware support for DSVD options were dropped.

On 5 August 2003 the DAA was updated to a SmartDAA3 chip--the CX20493-21--and the Voice chip to a CX20442-11. The modem was now stated to fully support V.92 with MOH. In the middle of all of the above, the modem was re-positioned for use within embedded applications such as POS Terminals, Set-Top Boxes, Video Recorders, Metering, Security & Remote Site Management, although it has always had V.34 & V32bis chipset-options in addition to (the original) V.90 + K56flex.

Because of the above history, there are a vast number of different chips which can appear as part of this chipset. What follows below is a discussion of the chipset as part of a ‘traditional’ dial-up modem.

This series of modems--which can be identified by the presence of a “PLL” in the ati6 response, typically with 2 MB of Flash-ROM, allowing either V.92, V.90 or K56flex connection--looks like this (new to old):
  • SC56D - 06827-xx
  • SmartACF - P9373-xx (later 81300-xx)
  • SmartSCM - P2106-xx (embedded)
  • Rockwell -> Conexant
  • RC56D2 - R6764-6x
This & the SC56D chipset tend to share the same EEPROM ID, and manufacturers tend to leave that to be the same as the SmartSCM.

The “D” in the names above indicates that the modem downloads Firmware controller- & datapump-modules into the chip whilst in operation. This method of operation provides flexibility to the manufacturer in customisation of the modem. In addition, if Flash-EEPROM is provided, the modem Firmware can be upgraded by the customer. (The difference between this & the HCF-modems--which use a very similar method of operation & even share module-code--is that these modems contain a Controller in silicon, whereas the H-ost C-ontrolled M-odems use the computer for controller functions).

Key

Mfc: the company no longer makes/supplies modems and/or their chipsets, or has been taken over, or otherwise fallen into commercial Tophet.

Modem: it is no longer in production.

Chip, Chipset, Family or Family-Type: it is no longer produced at the Foundry.

In short, the item marked with a has shuffled off this mortal coil, it has gone to meet it’s maker, to sing with the choir invisible; it is, not to put too fine a point upon it, an ex-modem (-Mfc, -Chip, -Chipset, -Family or -Type).

Site Info, History & Page Stats

These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (still maintained, but just re-direction pages to this site). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.

Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
