General Information

Originated by Conexant on 2 November, 1999 this was a development of the enormously successful, Rockwell-originated HCF chipsets, and intended for use within modems designed for Mobile computers. The main innovation was the use of the “SmartDAA” silicon chip. This latter had the advantages of zero power-draw from the telephone line, elimination of mechanical components, simple worldwide homologation of the entire chipset, improved lightning protection and, of course, meant that Conexant could sell the modem manufacturers a DAA.

The SmartHCF/M was pin-compatible with the SmartHSF/M SoftK56 chipset. This allowed one set of development work to produce two modems. The SmartHCF/M was sold at a premium compared to the SmartHSF/M (it is a much, much better chipset) although the difference in parts-cost is negligible.

The SmartHCF-USB is the USB variant of the chipset, whilst the SmartHCF is the vanilla PCI variant of the same chipset.
