General Information
- This chipset type was started in the days of AT&T, expanded by Lucent & continued by Agere. Modem controller functions (AT-commands, etc.) have been taken out of the modem and processed in software on the host-computer. DSP functions are still in silicon in the modem. This reduces the demand on the computer’s CPU (not so important these days) and also makes it easier to move to other OSs from the original Windows host-OS.
It is an immensely popular modem chipset (I’ve got one)--there are, therefore, a vast number of variations on the same theme. This can be very confusing, but the good news is that most Lucent Win Modem drivers will work with most Lucent Win Modems, regardless of the variation. To check your precise variant requires a knowledge of the DSP chip number:

If a driver older than v5.44 is updated there will be a name-change, and the connection software will not find the driver anymore. Windows’ users can fix this on the Properties sheet of DialUp-Networking (DUN) - look under the File menu when the DUN entry is highlighted.
Lucent retained the AT&T PCI ID when it was spun off from Bell Labs, hence the MFC name.
