General Information
A modem containing one of these chipsets was my introduction to the world of “high-speed” communications. Oh dear, oh dear.

The chipset provides an ISA-bus interface & a telephone-line interface, and that is it. Everything else needed by a modem occurs in software on the Host computer. This is a viable proposition with modern computers & the PCI-bus, but was a total headache in the 1990’s when I tried it on a Cyrix 233 (poor floating-point support, an anathema to soft devices).

All support for their entire range of SM56 modems was abandoned by Motorola on 21 Jul 2001. The following is true for all SM56 modems:

  • Build 67.1 : Latest ISA driver.
  • Build 51 & later : V.90 + K56Flex.
  • Build 50 & earlier : K56flex only.

Known Problems
Diamond state that their ISA modem is not supported under winMe nor win2k (ie no WDM drivers).
Build 62.1 Gives mostly-reliable V.90 connection & d/l with Freeserve (FS--Cisco servers) at V.90.
Build 58 Needs setting to USA as country [Control Panel->Motorola SM56 Modem->Advanced tab->set Country] or slowing to V34 [“at%b18” no quotes in Extra Settings] in order to connect at all.
Build 52+ Needs setting to USA as country [“at+gci=b5” no quotes] or slowing to V34 [“at%b18” no quotes] in Extra Settings in order to connect at all.
Build 52 Unreliable V.90 with FS - d/l slows after high start.
Beta Build 10 Unreliable with FS - d/l slows after high start.

Key

Mfc: the company no longer makes/supplies modems and/or their chipsets, or has been taken over, or otherwise fallen into commercial Tophet.

Modem: it is no longer in production.

Chip, Chipset, Family or Family-Type: it is no longer produced at the Foundry.

In short, the item marked with a has shuffled off this mortal coil, it has gone to meet it’s maker, to sing with the choir invisible; it is, not to put too fine a point upon it, an ex-modem (-Mfc, -Chip, -Chipset, -Family or -Type).

Site Info, History & Page Stats

These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (sadly, now gone). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.

Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
