Modem Chipsets Index

An index for V.92, V.90 & V.34 modem chipsets.

You need to know either the name of the chipset or to have a reference from an Integrated Circuit in/on the modem to use this page.

The links below lead to the individual chipset pages:

  • with a modem model name use the Manufacturers page
  • with a model reference number use the Site Index
  • if the modem is completely unknown try What's My Modem?

    ...issue another version!

V.90 is spoken of elsewhere [detailed info & simple guide]. The protocol was ratified in November 1998, and V.92 a year later. Each V.92- or V.90-capable chipset manufacturer has issued a driver which gave V.90/2 speeds under their laboratory conditions, and have released further versions of this original driver to meet the problems experienced in actual field use. Listed on the pages linked above & below are the driver versions & issue dates for all chipsets that I can find.

At the time of writing (April 2002) V.90 modems finally give a reliable & fast connection to most V.90-enabled ISP's, so the driver writers have turned their attention to V.92, and have decided to repeat the mistakes of V.90 all over again. In addition, virtually no major ISP has upgraded their modems to V.92, preferring to stick with V.90. Watch for a whole new batch of problems if they ever do upgrade.

Remember, if you are satisfied with the quality of your modem's connection DON'T CHANGE YOUR DRIVER! It is possible that your connection may suffer - a later driver that fixes some problems often introduces new problems for other situations. Change only if a poor-quality connection demands it (and all other reasons for the performance have been fixed).
