General Information
- Wireless-LAN adapters using these Spectrum-24 chipsets can only be used on intel Centrino-chipset MBs. The identical drivers + PROSet software will load both this and the Centrino Embedded 802.11abg WLAN chipsets (PRO/Wireless 2200BG (this chipset), plus PRO/Wireless 2915ABG + PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection devices).
Drivers originate from intel, who also produce the PROSet configuration-software, which latter is a replacement for the Microsoft-supplied "Windows Wireless Zero Config" utility for WLAN devices. intel does not produce the hardware directly (neither do the laptop manufacturers), but does supply both drivers + PROSet to the manufacturers. These latter often customise PROSet for the specific laptop. In particular, both driver-version and PROSet-version may differ from that supplied by intel. The importance of that last sentence becomes apparent with the next paragraph...
Security Alert!
Drivers prior to v9.0.4.16 and PROSet software prior to v10.5 (intel version numbers) have a security hole which will allow local access to the machine. Current (Aug 06) bug-fixed PROSet software also has a memory-leak which will compromise system resources, slow down the machine and eventually cause failure. More information is available on the forums.
Extra Info

Known Problems
- PROSet software: Upgrading to another version can delete or corrupt wireless profiles, removing keys and making it impossible to connect/logon after upgrade.
Fix: Export the profile(s) before upgrading, then import after update.

Site Info, History & Page Stats
These pages are a LAMP-development of the original Modem-Help, UK site (most of the old HTML pages still exist, but havn’t been updated for quite some time). That site, in it’s turn, was a transfer from the first html site on free-pages at Freeserve (sadly, now gone). The current format allows superb search facilities, customisation by Registered members, plus is quick ‘n’ easy to update.
Diligently put together in the UK by Alex Kemp. All efforts have been taken to ensure the veracity of what is written - if you know of any errors or omissions then please let us know.
