General Notes Controllerless (Host Accelerated) Linux- or Windows-only V.90/V.92 PCI Chipset
general info: This was the Ambient-introduced replacement for the original Cirrus Logic MD562X controllerless (see bottom) chipset. It has in its turn been superceded by the Intel 536EP chipset. Intel continues to support the chipset.

A controllerless Linux- or Windows-only PCI card that contains a DSP (Digital Signal Processer) chip but passes controller functions (AT-Commands etc) to the host-computer's OS. Intel refers to this as "HaM" (Host Accelerated Modem).

Cirrus Logic spun all its modem chipsets off as an independant company called Ambient Technologies. Ambient introduced this chipset as a replacement for the original Cirrus Logic MD562X controllerless chipset. Ambient became part of Intel, and Intel now no longer uses the Ambient name. Intel continues to support this chipset.

01 Jun 2001 Thanks to John Lane for reporting broken links. (Whilst updating the links, BTW, I discovered that Intel uses a 1x1 pixel graphic - spff9900.gif - in its LH Navigation bar. These are often used as spyware.)
20 Feb 2001 Thanks to Paul Mullen for reporting a website change from Ambient to Intel.
