A very popular flash-upgradeable 1 MB ROM 56K chipset that supports either V.90 or K56Flex^TM depending on the code within the firmware. Voice (speakerphone) capable (depends on chipset & OEM implementation). Desktop, internal & PC-Card (PCMCIA) versions available. Caution! Make sure that the flash upgrade is for the correct model. See Media Force for a cautionary tale. The better flashes check for the correct chipset before going ahead, & this chipset has many variants, including a 2 MB ROM version. Flash "hangs" at 91% Go and make a cup of tea - the flashing process must not be interrupted or the modem will be useless, permanently. This behaviour is normal & it normally goes to completion in a few minutes. Wizard reports Freeserve is not a V.90 ISP The wizard detects formerly-K56Flex ISP's now using V.90 connections. Freeserve has been V.90 from the start, & the wizard is wrong - go ahead & flash anyway. Don't forget the drivers! Upgrading is usually a 2-stage process: 1 flash-upgrade the modem 2 update the computer drivers Windows - INF file - the modem in Dial-Up Networking Properties (General page) will need changing if an upgrade causes a name change. Mac^® - Modem Script 28 Aug 02 Thanks to Robert Resch for the following: “I've found a way to recover dead Rockwell 56K Modems with the firmware-File downloadable from the manufacturer. It's a small Perl-Script that generates the binary-file from the .s37 File. The Perl-Script is now Hard-Coded for 1MBit Firmware but is easily changed to 2MBit. The Bin-File can be written to the Flash-Rom (should be a 29EE010) with a Flash-Writer available at loet.de or any better eprom-writer. As a benefit you can change everything on your modem - change the country-code and so on.
