General Notes Soft Linux- & Windows-only V.90/K56FlexTM Chipset
general info: All modem functions implemented in software. The host computer needs enough memory (win95/98/Me - min 32 MB, win2000 - min 64 MB) & CPU speed (above 400 MHz) to be effective (see conflicts below). Drivers seem to be interchangeable between modems (use at own risk).

3.05.12 (V.92)
3.05.02
Ben Holloway reports poor connections (a Lucent V.92 connects fine to the same ISP server) & difficult installation if prior uninstallation is not thorough. His advice is to avoid on earlier chipsets.
2.14.12
2.14.07
Ben Holloway reports is unstable in some situations, crashing Checkit Netoptmizer and Modem Wizard, whilst some properties are difficult to find, available via DUN but not via Device Manager.
2.13.06 Ben Holloway strongly advocates this version (presumably not under win2000 - see next).
2.13.06 [Windows 2000] Marco & Da Wrecka report system shutdown on connection (cf 1.40 below) with the CIS (Wisecom) upgrade.
2.12.03 [Windows 2000] Geoffrey Benn (& others) report system shutdown on connection (cf 1.40 below)
2.11.06 Ben Holloway reports uses 100% of CPU power; lower and higher versions don't.
2.09.03 [Windows 2000] Jason Clifton reports drivers from Zoltrix & AOpen do not work
2.08.02 Roy Fielding reports drop-outs with Lineone.net and IC24.net were fixed with an updated driver
2.08.01 drop-outs reported with Freeserve
2.07.01 Jim Darling reports drop-outs with tds.net
2.02 some drop-outs with Freeserve
1.44 frequent drop-outs with Freeserve
1.40 & earlier system shutdown on some [slower] computers when a V.90 connection is attempted with Freeserve. Putting "at+ms=K56" [no quotes] in Extra Settings will stop the system shutdown. It will slow FS connections to 33,600 bit/s max.
Virge S3 & some other video cards can clash with the modem driver. Drivers & a video patch are available here.

A software Linux- (Sep 2000) & Windows-only chipset that supports both V.90 and K56FlexTM. The original Windows modem driver-name was "Rockwell SoftK56 Data,Fax,Speakerphone PCI Modem" & by v2.05 had become "Conexant SoftK56 Data,Fax,Speakerphone PCI Modem" - the modem in Dial-Up Networking Properties (General page) will need changing if an upgrade causes a name change. Drivers seem to be interchangeable between suppliers (use at own risk).

This modem has caused much grief to many owners (cf Motorola SM56). It has the least number of chips on-board of all the Conexant modems, therefore the lowest cost & also the greatest number of modem functions implemented in software.

21 Jun 02 Thanks to the Doctor for news that his Website is back online.
17 Jun 02 Thanks to the Doctor for mailing me HSFbooster v2.06 Standard Edition - show statistics after connect added to the program.
21 Apr 02 Thanks to the Doctor for mailing me HSFbooster v2.03 Standard Edition & allowing it to be downloaded from this site.
13 Mar 02 Thanks to the Doctor for an updated Website address (unfortunately closed 7 April, back 21 Jun).
03 Jan 02 Thanks to Alessio for info on official Conexant Linux drivers on a Canadian Website. Astonishing. With this & the 16 Dec news, is it possible that Conexant are getting to grips with the practical implications of customer support?
25 Dec 01 Thanks to the Doctor for info on updated drivers on his new Website.
16 Dec 01 Thanks to Kit Peters for news of generic HCF & HSF drivers (PCI only) for all versions of Windows.
02 Dec 01 Thanks to the Doctor for info on updated drivers on his Website plus the news that "my site frequently happens is closed because of a monthly limit of target traffic".
30 Nov 01 Thanks to Alex Bonev for info on an updated XP driver via Windows Update for his Acorp M-561RW.
07 Aug 01 Thanks to the Doctor for news of V.92 drivers on his Website offering corrected drivers for Acorp International & other modems plus SfR1a1 - a Stats program.
03 Aug 01 Thanks to Ben Holloway for an update on V.92 inter-connects (see conflicts above). Ben was pleased to help 70 people but needed to have his email address removed from this page due to the unpleasant responses of 10 other people.
16 May 01 Thanks to the Doctor for news of his Website offering corrected drivers for Acorp International & other modems. These are R6793-11, R6793-12 & R6793-17 chipsets. Drivers are referenced by PnP IDs - these can be discovered by using the MDU Diagnostics Utility. From 1 Jul 01 this includes HSFbooster (in beta).
24 Apr 01 Thanks to Ben Holloway for a very useful breakdown of modem performance with drivers ranging between v2.02 & v2.14.12 on 3 different brands of modem and 5 different ISPs (see conflicts above) - at least one brand has a RS56/SP-PCI R6793-11 chipset. Ben reckons that v2.13.06 is the Bees Knees. He has also never had a problem whilst doing this from multiple manufacturers & has never damaged a modem. He also has good words for the HCF Configurator (see next).
16 Feb 01 Thanks to Karen Tamrazian for the link to his HCF Configurator site (also works on non-w2k HSF chipsets).
15 Jan 01 Thanks to Imran Ghory for news of a Linux driver (at French site Olitec). This seems to be an Olitec-produced driver, which is just as well since Conexant seems completely indifferent to producing a Linux driver for one of the cheapest and most widely-distributed modem chipsets.
28 May 00 Thanks to Neil Chamberlain for reporting success from HIS for a Microscience modem with a RS56/SP-PCI R6793-21 chipset.
06 Mar 99 The host computer's CPU needs enough horsepower to get the job done. Early drivers have been reported to run fine on a 450 MHz CPU but not on a 233 MHz CPU [same owner].
