USR 001750 56K WinModem Voice (USA)

USR is the last modem chipset assembler that also produces its own modems. Its line of WinModem®s is probably the most popular OEM modem (Original Equipment Manufacturer modems provided pre-fitted into other people's computers) in the world. Driver support for OEM modems is patchy on the USR American site, and nonexistent on non-American USR websites. Good hunting.

USR introduced 14.4k WinModems (install & utility files are dated 1996). A 28.8k WinModem can be upgraded to 36.6k, whilst 33.6k x2TM WinModems can be upgraded to V.90.

  • 21 Jan 2002 Thanks to MicronPC Webeditor for notice of a change to the following MicronPC link. Drivers for the Avenger PCI, Coyote PCI & Python PCI modems are also provided.
  • 20 May 1999 Thanks to Nigel for the following info on the UK 011680 Sportster ISA WinModem:

The V.90 upgrade for a re-badged USR WinModem called a "Greyhound" does work on a UK WinModem and according to "ati7" it then becomes a USA/Canada WinModem ... but it did work OK in the UK. Download from Micron PC site.

The upgrade using this is not easy, iirc after running the upgrade you have two modems in win, the original and the new one. The upgrade replaces the software for the original so you just remove the new modem from "control panel > modems" and the original is upgraded.

Note 1 USR say that using the wrong upgrade can damage the modem, I take no responsibility for any one trying this :-)
Note 2 US versions of the WinModems are notoriously difficult to reinstall. This is because not all items are removed from windows registry when the modem is removed which prevents windows from detecting the modem on re-boot. There is a file at the above site which clears the registry and corrects this problem (also available as above).
Note 3 WinModems are prone to show the port speed rather than the modem speed on connection. A Registry import file is available as a d/l to correct this (from this site - USR WinModem Speed Fix).
