Modem Reinstallation

The above is sufficient - almost - if all you wish to do is remove the modem from the computer system, permanently. References WILL remain to the SM56 in the Registry, as every program that has made any use of it will have stored something about the modem, but you are on your own if you are foolish enough to want to strip the Registry clean of every mention - although I understand the sentiment.

Below are the steps if you are going to use this utility as part of a modem reinstallation. It is not too difficult, and at least it is the best way to guarantee as clean an installation as possible.

1 Saving the old installation.
Use Windows Explorer to
2 Get ready for the new installation.
The installation file - ISA-SM56B62.exe or PCI-SM56B62.exe - is a self-extracting ZIP file. It is easiest to use Windows Explorer again to
3 Re-start the computer
After the POST [Power On Self Test] screen the computer will detect new hardware & launch into the Add-New-Hardware wizard You may get the same glitch that I got at this stage: cannot find _isdel.exe : A second Add-New-Hardware wizard will launch after detecting the sound facilities in the modem. As before
4 Finalising the installation
After Windows launches the modem setup routine will launch [identical to using Setup.exe from the installation files]. Choose options which are correct for your country & computer - these can later be modified in the Control Panel utility.

A folder called "Motset95" is created in the Programs folder, & the installation files are copied here. Files are created in the INF folder called "Motorola IncMISGMODM.INF" & "MotorolaSERWAVE.INF".

After you have verified that everything is working fine, the backup folder can be deleted & Windows\Temp emptied. I suggest that you put the cleanup file & the self-extracting installation file somewhere safe. Try not to forget about them - like I did.
