	Model Identification:
	USR provides an Update Wizard (Mac® users - US/Canada only - or OEM models, plus Instruction Page) which both identifies the modem & helps to upgrade it. The SMF site says that entering "ATGBOOT5" then "ATI" (no quotes) within a Terminal program will also produce this 8-digit ID number (if a "Connect" is returned after the first command & the modem stops responding, just restart the modem - it cannot be flash updated). Then enter "ATGM" (no quotes) to return to normal mode. The serial number is discovered using "AT~S?" (no quotes) in normal mode. The SMF FAQ points out: The USR Modem Update Wizard requires that the modem make a telephone call (to a USA number) in the middle of the update process. Sportster models whose serial number ends with "ZZZ" have V.90 blocked (can be released if flashed with SMF) Many Asian models do not have USR flashes (available with SMF) Many models have identical Firmware Models with the same last 6 digits in the ID have identical Firmware The USR flash consists of a Boot-block plus IHOF (Intel Hex Object Format) code - SMF V.90 Flashes consist only of the latter. It is the processing of this boot block which is the dangerous part of the flash process, as interruption at this point will render the modem useless.
